Stone faces above the galleries of Bayon

Series: Among the Temples of Angkor · Digital

Bayon temple in Angkor Thom: a tower carved with stone faces rises over a courtyard of galleries and pillars. The faces look calmly out in different directions from the weathered sandstone, with smaller towers crowded behind. On the right, a pillared gallery under a heavy stone roof throws deep shade over the paving, and fallen blocks lie by the steps. Strong sun picks out every carved detail against a pale blue sky.
