Hand-painted tiles at Cerâmica de Sintra

Series: Exploring Portugal · Digital

A pink wall in Sintra hung with hand-painted tile panels, with an old iron lantern in the middle. A framed sign reads Cerâmica de Sintra, and a small note explains that everything is painted by hand and made on the premises. The panels show a Madonna and Child, a cherub, a rooster labelled Portugal, a yellow tram on a busy street and a blue-and-white staircase. No two are alike, from ornate baroque borders to soft watercolour.
