A big wall map of Ukraine, with Україна across the top, hangs from a wooden rod in a covered passage in Kyiv. Someone has wrapped it in clear plastic and taped down the corners, and scraps of old notices are still stuck to the wall beside it. Leaf shadows and patches of sun fall across the map and the paving. To the left, the passage opens onto the street: a curved fence, a lamp post, flower beds and a pavilion with a green roof.
